Freedonia Market Research Press Releases Product Innovations to Boost Small Kitchen Appliance Sales

Product Innovations to Boost Small Kitchen Appliance Sales

Smart features, expanding cordless options to spur value gains

Cleveland, OH, June 25, 2024 — US demand for small household kitchen appliances is forecast to advance 6.6% per year in nominal terms through 2028, according to Small Kitchen Appliances: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Suppliers will benefit from growth in disposable personal incomes, household formation, and construction expenditures on residential building improvements. In addition, demand in value terms will continue to receive a boost from the ongoing sale of products offering innovations and new features that help reduce the time and effort required for food and beverage preparation. Examples of innovations and new features include appliances that can connect to the internet, smart home hubs, virtual assistants, and cordless appliances that allow for ease of use anywhere in the house, without the limitations of power outlets and cord range.

Faster gains will be limited by competition from beverages and meals prepared at eating and drinking establishments, which reduces the use of small kitchen appliances and postpones replacement. The availability of coffee, fast food meals, fruit beverages, and snacks from chain restaurants with significant funding available for investing and marketing new and trending menu items limits higher levels of appliance use at home, restricting demand levels. Furthermore, the ongoing improvement in the food and beverage pickup and delivery experience, particularly internet-originated ordering, further reduces the need to use small kitchen appliances. High levels of market saturation for many items and penetration by low-cost imports will also restrain faster advances.

These and other key insights are featured in Small Kitchen Appliances: United States. This report forecasts to 2028 US small kitchen appliances demand and shipments in nominal US dollars at the manufacturer level. Total demand is segmented by product in terms of:

  • coffee makers
  • mixers and blenders
  • portable ovens and stoves
  • grinders and processors
  • small cooking appliances, such as electric griddles, grills, hot plates, rice cookers, roasters, and sandwich makers
  • toasters
  • juicers
  • other small kitchen appliances such as bread makers, multicookers, pressure cookers, slow cookers, tea makers, and parts and attachments

To illustrate historical trends, total demand, total shipments, the various segments, and trade are provided in annual series from 2013 to 2023.

The scope of this report includes electric household-type small kitchen appliances. Manual products are excluded (e.g., manual grinders). Appliances powered by natural gas, propane, and wood are also excluded. In addition, ice cream makers, soda makers, microwaves, and vacuum sealers are excluded from the scope of this report. Appliances designed for commercial or industrial use are excluded. Re-exports of small kitchen appliances are excluded from demand and trade figures.

This report includes the results of a proprietary national online consumer survey of US adults (age 18+). This Freedonia Focus Reports National Online Consumer Survey has a sample size of approximately 1,500, screened for response quality, and representative of the US population on the demographic measures of age, gender, geographic region, race/ethnicity, household income, and the presence/absence of children in the household.
