Recovery in underlying factors, such as household formation and home sales, to spur increases
Cleveland, OH, July 24, 2024 — US demand for tableware and kitchenware at the manufacturer level is forecast to grow 5.6% annually in nominal terms through 2028, according to Tableware & Kitchenware: United States, a report recently released by Freedonia Focus Reports. Suppliers are expected to benefit from growth in the number of households, new marriages, sales of new and existing homes, and disposable personal incomes, and an ongoing interest in cooking at home, particularly for households with children as they desire to cook and eat healthy and manage expenses compared to purchasing prepared foods. In part, the increased interest in home cooking has been aided by meal kit services such as Blue Apron and HelloFresh, which make cooking meals at home easier and faster. Furthermore, demand in value terms is projected to receive a boost from sales of premium cookware that is marketed as featuring higher quality and durability and helping achieve superior cooking results. In addition, sales of tableware and kitchenware to commercial users are projected to advance as retail sales at eating and drinking places are forecast to expand 4.3% annually to 2028. However, further demand gains in value terms will be limited by competition from products imported from countries with lower labor costs and from ongoing growth in internet sales where price competition is significant.
In 2024, demand is projected to expand 16%, representing a rebound from a 19% decline in 2023 as sales eased from the surge driven by the COVID-19 pandemic. The number of households is forecast to advance 1.2% in 2024, a marked improvement from a nearly flat trend in 2023. Existing home sales are projected to rebound 5.4% in 2024 following strong declines in 2022 and 2023. Retail sales at eating and drinking places are forecast to advance 4.9% in 2024 as consumers continue to value commercial dining experiences, often associated with recreation and entertainment events and vacations following years of limited social activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ongoing expansion in sales for eating and drinking establishments will support sales of tableware and kitchenware to commercial users.
