K-12 Social Studies Market Survey Report 2019 provides information on what materials educators are using for social studies instruction. It details where the programs used are coming from, whether the use of those programs is evolving from print to digital and outlines the attributes most sought by educators when evaluating core and supplemental social studies resources.

This all-new Simba Information report continues a publication series on the instructional materials market previously done by an acquired Simba property Education Market Research. The most recent social studies report in that EMR series published in January 2015.

About the Survey

This report is built on the results of a 21-question survey that was sent to 18,000 educators in April 2019. The list of educator names was purchased from MCH Strategic Data. The mailing list included classroom teachers, social studies teachers, social studies department chairs and curriculum/instruction supervisors.

Among the respondents, 48% identified themselves as classroom teachers, 34% self-identified as social studies teachers, with 13% identifying as social studies department chairs, 7% identifying as curriculum/instruction supervisors and 4% identifying as assistant superintendents/principals.

Results are reported in total and are broken out by sub-sets when pertinent. Results from the 2019 April survey also are compared to results from previous Simba subject area surveys and from earlier EMR social studies reports when that is illuminating. Full breakouts of the survey data are included in the expansive appendix to the report.

This report is built around the mail survey and Simba’s own ongoing research provides added context to the analysis and commentary.
