Demand for air filters will be supported by a variety of environmental concerns
Cleveland OH, May 14, 2024 -- The adoption of new regulations is an important driver of both global filter sales and technological innovation in the filter industry. For instance, as new emissions regulations were adopted for gasoline motor vehicles around the world since 2018, the use of gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) – which ensure compliance with particulate matter requirements – has surged and manufacturers rolled out new products.
In February 2023, the EU Parliament and the European council reached an agreement on “the revised Ambient Air Quality Directive”, which will “set 2030 EU air quality standards”. The new rules will “lower limits for a range of pollutants, including the ones causing the most harm to human health, fine particulate matter (PM2,5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2)”. The new air quality standards are part of the EU’s strategy to reach zero air, water, and soil pollution by 2050, and will be followed by additional regulations and efforts to address environmental issues.
Initiatives such as this one from the EU will have a long-term impact on global filter spending as well as the adoption of new technologies. As our understanding of the dangers of air, water, and other types of pollution evolves, the use of filters – including many newly-developed products – will increase.
According to the Global Filters study demand for air filters is forecast to expand 3.9% annually to $26.5 billion in 2028. Demand for air filters will be supported by a variety of environmental concerns:
The large installed base of HVAC systems that utilize panel and pocket filters will also foster steady replacement demand.
