Cleveland OH, April 29, 2024 – The adoption of new regulations – such as air and water quality, and motor vehicle emissions standards – is among the leading drivers of filter use. Because such rules mandate the use of new filtration technologies, they generate both OEM and aftermarket filter demand. New regulations also fuel technological innovation and product development in the global filter industry, and have a major impact on consumer preferences. Standards adopted in one country or region, often have an impact on other parts of the world.
In April 2024, the US EPA “finalized strict limits on certain so-called “forever chemicals” in drinking water that will require utilities to reduce them to the lowest level they can be reliably measured”. The new rule (for the first time) targets perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) and hopes to “reduce exposure for 100 million people and help prevent thousands of illnesses, including cancers”. Compliance with the new regulation is estimated to cost about $1.5 billion annually. Utilities have three years to implement testing and two additional years to install filtration equipment. A large portion of utilities are thought to already be in compliance with the new rules.
In order to meet the strict PFAs limits, utilities in the US will turn to a variety of advanced filtration technologies, such as carbon filtration and reverse-osmosis water filters. As our understanding of water pollution evolves, regulations will continued to be tightened. The adoption of restrictions on PFAs in the US is likely to motivate regulators in other parts of the world to take action as well.
