US demand to grow 4.7% annually through 2017

US demand for consumer water and air treatment systems is forecast to increase 4.7 percent per year through 2017 to over 18 million units, an acceleration from lackluster growth posted during the 2007 to 2012 period due to the 2007-2009 recession and the collapse of the housing market. Volume gains will be supported by the economic recovery, particularly the rebound in residential construction and consumer spending. The improving housing market will contribute significantly to volume demand growth since many consumers purchase water and air treatment systems at the time of home construction or remodeling or when purchasing a new home. Further driving volume demand will be the continued trend of a greater number of consumers interested in improving the quality of the water they drink and the air in their homes and increased awareness of the health and aesthetic benefits of water and air treatment systems.

Value demand to rise 6.5% annually to $2.1 billion

Consumer water and air treatment systems value demand is projected to advance 6.5 percent per year to $2.1 billion in 2017. Gains in value demand will primarily benefit from improved unit sales, particularly for whole-house water and air treatment systems, which are higher priced items than portable or room/outlet specific units. Sales of whole-house water and air treatment systems declined along with the significant contraction in single-family housing completions during the 2007 to 2012 period, since these units are often installed in newly built homes. In addition, economic uncertainty and limited access to credit caused many consumers to delay big ticket purchases in existing housing stock during the 2007 to 2012 period. A rebound in single-family housing construction and improved access to credit will propel sales of whole-house water and air treatment systems through 2017. Going forward, demand will also benefit from the development of value-added systems featuring advanced or multiple treatment technologies, improved operating efficiency, and better aesthetics.

Whole-house systems to outpace POU, portable types

Point-of-use (POU) water and portable air treatment systems -- units operating at a single water outlet or in a single room -- are expected to post slower growth than their whole-house counterparts through 2017. Nevertheless, these systems will continue to account for a larger share of both volume and value demand. Gains will primarily benefit from heightened consumer concern regarding potential contaminants in household tap water and air. Conventional filtration media are used in the majority of POU water and portable air treatment systems. However, in POU water treatment, faster growth will be registered by reverse osmosis and other membranes and distillation systems, although from significantly smaller bases. Among portable air cleaners, faster gains will be realized for electrostatic technologies. These options with better growth prospects are higher value systems that can typically remove a broader range of contaminants compared to conventional filters. Further advances will be promoted by individuals seeking alternatives to bottled water, primarily for economical (the annual cost of using POU water filtration is typically lower than that spent on bottled water) or environmental (if less bottled water is consumed, less plastic is required to make the bottles and there are fewer bottles to landfill or recycle) reasons.

Study Scope

This study covers the US consumer market for treatment systems primarily designed to decrease the amount of contaminants (and to some extent minerals, in the case of water) from air and water in households. Systems purchased by consumers for personal use outside of the home (e.g., for work or school) are also considered. Consumables, such as replacement filters and membranes, and salt, are also included. Excluded are home air treatment systems that are classified simply as odor elimination products. In addition, automotive cabin air filters, and refrigerator air and water filters are excluded because the systems are originally sold to equipment manufacturers and only the replacement units are sold to consumers.

Historical data are provided for 2002, 2007, and 2012, with forecasts for 2017 and 2022. Demand for consumer water and air treatment systems is provided in units and current dollars and is detailed by technology and product type. Thus, data are presented for water treatment systems by technology (particle filtration, reverse osmosis, distillation, and other) and by type (point of entry water purification and water softeners, and under-sink, countertop, faucet-mounted, and flow-through point-of-use systems), and air treatment systems by technology (particle filtration, electrostatic treatment, and other) and by type (whole-house and portable).

Regional water and air treatment system demand is also provided in dollars. Data covering demand for replacement filters, membranes, and salts in units and current dollars are also included. In addition, market share for major industry participants are identified, and the key competitive variables are discussed.
